There are many traditional arts in Myanmar which includes lacquerware, wood carving, and painting, reflect the country’s rich cultural soul. Passed down through generations, these crafts are part of the ten traditional arts of Myanmar and are deeply rooted in Buddhist influence and heritage. Despite modern changes, passionate artisans keep these traditions alive, each piece telling a meaningful story of faith, pride, and identity.

1.Panchi - Art of Painting

Myanmar traditional Panchi is the art of painting with gorgeous decorations with varied colors. Myanmar artists traditionally paint the figures of human beings, animals, objects, scenery designs and many. Of all the historical stages that Myanmar has experienced, traditional paintings owe a big time in Konbaung era with the greatest number of paintings which were more colorful and livelier when compared to that of other periods.

2.Panyun – Art of Making Lacquerware

Bagan, site of the architectural wonders of the East, is considered the home of this art form Panyun is the art of making materials using bamboo, wood, and thick black paint. Lacquerware craftsmen produce begging bowl food bowl for Monaco and teacup pickled painted ship, cup, box Betel and cigar box. The artistry and historical values make many of the Panyun lacquerware invaluable.

3.Panbe - Art of Blacksmith

Panbe is the process of making necessary things by tempering iron in the furnace. Blacksmiths create items from wrought iron or steel by forging the metal, using tools to hammer, bend, and cut.
Thanks to the art of the blacksmith, the artisans could make and repair a wide array of things varying from the most complex of weapons and armor to simple things like nail, tyre, scissors, hammer, adze, pickaxe, and lengths of chain.

4.Panbe - Art of Blacksmith

The art of Panbu is defined as the progress of producing figures and floral designs made of wood or ivory. The artisans make the figure of human beings and animals and floral designs. This traditional sculpture of Myanmar contains wood sculpture, stone sculpture and plaster sculpture. The artisans make create wooden figure or figurine by means of a knife in one hand or a chisel by two hands.It was not until the Bagan period this making of sculpture in wood and stone emerged, afterward, it saw a drastic improvement in the middle of Bagan Era. This traditional art of Myanmar was greatly influenced by religion of Buddhism which has origin from Southern India in the 11th century A.D. The ancient temples and palaces were magnificently decorated with carved wooden gables and eaves, and other fabulous ornamentation comprised of the most creative and intricate woodcarvings.

6.Pantin - Art of Bronze Casting

The making of materials of copper, bronze or brass is called Patin. The historical period where the archeological record contains many bronze artifacts is known as the Bronze Age. Owning to this traditional art, a number of things including triangular brass gong, gong, and brass bowl for monk are produced under the skillful hands of the artisans. The traditional coppersmith’s craft of Myanmar appeared before Bagan period, and it witnessed an improvement during the period of Bagan and Ava.

7.Pantaut - Art of Making Floral Designs Using Masonry

Pantaut refers to the work of using stucco to create decorative floral designs in relief. The craftsmen are the figures of mythical lions, dragons and floral patterns. People in Myanmar started practicing this art before the Bagan period and it kept improving tremendously in the Bagan, Ava, Amarapura and Yadanapon areas. The historical records show that the works of Stucco were once very well-known in Bagan period. In Bagan time Stucco works specialized in detailed decorations. Afterward, we had Stucco carvings of mid-Konbaung or Amarapura period, which had Burmese style and were very fine.

8.Panyan - Art of Bricklaying & Masonr

Panyan means the work of constructing the building with bricks, stones, and cement. The masons erect brick dwellings, stupas, bridges. Masonry in Myanmar emerged since the Pyu period in the 1st century A.D.

Amazing strength, unbeatable grandeur beauty, unbelievable details, and appropriate decorations have made this Myanmar’s traditional masonry works well-known globally. In Bagan era, this kind of art enjoyed the golden age and ancient pagodas and other religious structures from the Bagan era are the stellar examples of Myanmar’s traditional masonry works. 9.Pantamault - Art of Stone Sculpting

Pantamault refers to the art of stones curving. Traditionally the artisans in this country make Buddha images stock for Sima, flag poles, pillars, animal decorations like leopards, elephants, deer, circular flat stone pestle and mortar and table. This kind of art is widely practiced throughout Myanmar today and it has become the pride and honor of Myanmar people.Yangon, Mandalay and other towns in the country showcases a number of Pantamault studios but the majority of studios are mostly held in the city Mandalay.
Marble craftsmanship is an interesting topic. It is commonly said that an auspicious day and time have to be chosen carefully by an astrologer before the artisans carve the very first marble images.

10.Panpoot - Art of Turning Designs on the Lathe

Panpoot is crafting wooden utensils, turning on the lathe turner. This work of wood crafting can be traced back to the Bagan period in the 8th century. By using this craft, people could make a number of diversified common items including food containers, boxes, bowls, tables, chairs, etc, which are all lively and attractive. This traditional fine art of Myanmar has been greatly influenced by Mon people, the people of Suvanna Bhumi artists and artisans in the early Bagan period.
Due to the art of turning designs on the lathe, items are created with intricate and interesting shapes, which are well favored by people all over the world.
